We were mellow after our early evening drinks and light meal in the soft warmth of Sue’s sitting room. Everything about it cooed “cosy”.
“Now, my darlings! I want to hear your resolutions!” it was like a brick shattering a stained-glass window. Chitter-chatter ceased, nervous glances were exchanged and mouths opened in dismay.
Sue noted that her demand had not gone down well. “I’m going to give up sex!” She declared to ease the tension. We laughed! The husbands were tight-lipped.
Alice, the witty cynic among us, drew breath and pronounced. “I’m going to give up making resolutions.” Another titter of laughter rippled around the room.
“Well, this is disappointing.” Poor Sue was deflated. She had thrown a New Year’s Eve party, albeit modest in scope, and wanted some entertainment from her guests. “We may be a bunch of old dears, but can’t we even pretend that we’re going to make a difference next year?”
I poured another glass of wine and made an effort.
“I suppose –”
“Yes.” Sue jumped in., “There’s an obvious one for you. You’ve been fiddling about with that novel of yours for ages. Grasp the nettle, old girl!”
Why had I ever admitted to the cause of my long periods of introspection?
“You’re the youngest.” Rita observed. “You ought to still be making resolutions. Come on, Georgie! Say it. Spit those words out.”
I felt that I should oblige my dear neighbours. The words only had to last a day.
“I resolve to publish my novel – although – it needs more editing – and my computer’s on the blink – and … really, I’d much rather resolve to just go on more Ramblers walks.”
“Nonsense darling!” Sue exclaimed. “We want to read your book!”
Panic gripped my throat. My brain was assaulted by images of my neighbours staring in horror at the pages I had crafted, complete with violence, bodily functions, swearing, and – worst of all – bad sex!
“Thank you.” The words struggled out of my mouth. I waved the wine bottle in salute. “Does anyone want a top-up?”
