Motivation

The minor irritations of life are a wet blanket for creativity. It was a relief yesterday to be staying with friends, with time to explore the lunacies of 21st century living. To take but one, the irony of communications companies being among the poorest of communicators should provide endless material for comedians. “Please hold, your call is important to us.” It’s so important that we can’t be bothered to employ enough staff to answer it promptly. “Your call may be used for training purposes.” Take that as a warning that we don’t train call-handlers beyond their narrow script, and your complex individual needs will be completely baffling to them. I could go on, but it would just be stressful. Sharing anecdotes of corporate zeal to annoy their loyal customers with friends who have their own, I started to feel the weight of my emptiness lifting.

And then – a quick scan on my phone during a break in the tennis on the TV and WOW I spot an email from the BBC. A piece I had submitted a few weeks ago had been selected for broadcast. Oh, hooray! What a lovely way to end an afternoon. But, no resting on laurels over an iced beverage! This triggers thoughts of what I might prepare for my next submission. Creativity is back…
